On The Calamities
Last night, I was watching the documentary program of both GMA and ABS-CBN which featured the places hit by the disaster. Nakakaawa ang aking nakikita. There was a man caught by the flow of the flood. A rescue helicopter crashed down. Rescuer’s automobile pushed by the water into the river. And marami pa.
I was even touched by the story told by a woman about her experience during the landslide. She said, she was buried alive by the lands, but she was fortunate enough when water came and the lands which covered her washed away until she got the chance to ask for help.
While watching the television, I remember the days when I was stranded in Allen, Samar last May 2004 during a typhoon. We stayed there since Friday night and we were able to cross the sea from Allen to Matnog, Camarines Sur on Monday midnight. Napakahirap ng panahon na iyon, wherein halos hindi ako nakakain since, masyadong napakamahal ng mga foods doon.
This afternoon at 1:00 was actually my scheduled flight for Cebu by Cebu Pacific Airlines, but when I heard the news that all flights were suspended, I immediately went to a ticketing office and changed my schedule.
According to the people I have talked with, Metro Manila was already on its signal number 2 for Typhoon Yoyong. But the signs of a typhoon were not showing until at 5:00 this afternoon wherein winds started to strike.
After the typhoon ‘Winnie’ left at least 350 people dead by landslide and flashfloods, now we are again experiencing the strength of ‘Yoyong’ with the speed of 185 km/hr when it hit the lands of Catanduanes.
Due to this present calamity, the President has ordered a suspension of works in the government and classes of schools nationwide starting 12:00 noon. Airlines companies suspended its flights, MRT 3 halted its operation at 6:00 pm and the LRT lines 1 and 2 at 8:00 pm.
