Philippines Hopes to Set Tree Record

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo took part Friday in a massive tree-planting campaign aimed at improving air quality in the Philippines while breaking a world record.

The "Green Philippine Highways" project initially aimed to simultaneously plant 500,000 trees on 2,137 miles of roads across the sprawling archipelago, but Environment Undersecretary Francisco Bravo said the figure may have been higher.

A U.S. congressional delegation will arrive in Manila on Friday to discuss economic, political and security issues with Philippine officials, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Manila on Wednesday. U.S. Congressman Henry Hyde, Chairman of the House International Relations Committee, will lead the delegation of five representatives from the U.S. Congress to visit the Philippines from August 11 to 13, the statement said.
